Saaty Photography: Tips for Bringing Dogs to Photography Sessions: How to have the best time! Being prepared for your portrait session and having everything planned out beforehand is important to make everything go smoothly. I love when clients bring their pets to be photographed as well – without doubt, they are a part of your family! Since our little furbabys can sometimes be a handful and your photoshoot should be as stress free as possible, I have come up with a few tips and tricks to help you plan your session.
#1 Arrive Early
The first advice I have is to arrive early to the shooting location and let your dog explore the surroundings. This way he can satisfy his curiosity and become familiar with the area. He can additionally run around and get his zoomies out. When we start shooting your pet will be more calm and happy to stay with you as also be less distracted by new things he sees.
#2 Bring Toys and Treats
Another important tip is to bring your pet’s favorite toys and treats. Having the toys there will allow you to take some pictures alone while your dog is entertaining himself. His toys can also help to calm him down or make him less bored. Plus, his favorite treats are, of course, a great way to encourage the furbaby to listen and behave, but also to reward good behavior.
#3 Bring an Extra Set of Hands
In case a friend or family member has some spare time, bringing them along is a perfect way of getting help with looking after your dog. Your photo session is about YOU! It should be fun and rather rejuvenating instead of stressful. Having someone there that can spend time with your dog and hold them will help you to fully concentrate on the moment and not worry about your pet.
#4 Allow Them to be Off-leash
My last advice would be to allow your dog to be off-leash. The locations I shoot in are likely not to be crowded and are surrounded by nature. There will be enough space for your pet to safely run around. Similar to letting them explore the area beforehand, having them be off-leash will allow them to enjoy the shoot as well and be more calm.
Photo sessions with dogs are always a lot of fun. Even when they have their zoomies and get excited, this can bring a lot of laughter to the pictures and create natural emotions.
