Choosing the Perfect Arizona Photography Location for Your Session

Choosing the Perfect Arizona Photography Location for Your Session

Perfect Arizona Photography Location: Your Dream Session. Location is everything! When my clients book a session, they usually have a certain look and feel in mind for their photos. Yet it can be difficult to find that perfect location that matches the feeling and emotion you’re searching for. Where you choose to take your photos will influence the story they tell and the end result. Your location should be one that holds a special meaning to you and photographs well. If you’re not sure where to start, keep reading to see some tips for choosing a location that will make your session a success!

I often travel across the country for sessions, but I find myself exploring my home state most often. There are five primary destinations that I frequent to capture your unique stories. These locations include Flagstaff, Sedona, Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Phoenix. Each of these destinations is near and dear to my heart.

Lighting

Have you ever taken a photo that would have come out great, but it didn’t look quite right because the lighting was off? We all have! The first thing you should take into consideration is the lighting of your location. You will want to choose a place that has excellent natural lighting and won’t cast shadows on you while you’re being photographed. You’ll find that the light hits locations differently at different times of day. Some locations might look great in the morning light, but not in the evening when the sun starts to set. You also don’t want to have so much light that it’s in your eyes or affecting your picture quality. So if you have a location in mind, pay attention to its natural lighting and take note of the time of day when the lighting looks best. Have fun with it!

Textures

Choosing a location with different textures can add interest and depth to your photos. For example, if you’re going for a more cozy and homey aesthetic, a brick wall as a backdrop can add a nice touch to your photos. Trees, plants, and mountains are also textures I use all the time to help bring my photos to life. Check out your location and see what textures you can find to complement the look and feel you’ve chosen for your photos. There is no right or wrong answer here, and the options are endless!

Privacy

Your location’s level of privacy is important to consider for two reasons. First of all, some of my clients may not feel comfortable with being photographed in front of others. It really depends on how you feel. If you find yourself feeling this way, you’ll want to choose a less trafficked area that can offer the privacy you need. What’s most important to me is that you feel comfortable and at ease during your session! And secondly, locations that are more crowded will be more difficult to photograph. Having a session on the NAU campus, for example, will be a little more complicated than taking photos at Buffalo Park. There may be people in the way of your backdrop and less space to work with. Ideally, choose a location that feels good to you and allows you to be yourself!

Proximity

Keep in mind that not all locations are created equal when it comes to the time and effort it takes to get there. Most locations will be easily accessible by car, but that’s not always the case. Some of my Sedona photography spots are located along the trails and may require a hike or brief walk. When choosing a location, think about the distance you’d want to travel and how much you’re willing to walk. This is an easy way narrow down your options. No matter where you go for your session, you’ll be confident knowing you’ve chosen a meaningful location that brings out the best in your photos!

Words can not express how thankful and happy we are that we chose Monica to capture our perfect day. She made us feel both comfortable and confident in the whole process. She has this ease that makes you feel you’ve known her for years. Her kindness, personality, and professionalism was beyond what we could have hoped for. Her communication and organization was so impressive as well (I am far from organized)! Our photos are AMAZING, they are perfect. We wish we could do it all over again, and again. Seriously, book her right now! Best choice we could have made, and she helped make our day so wonderfully memorable and way less stressful.
