How to Shoot a Surprise Proposal

How to Shoot a Surprise Proposal: Saaty Photography. One of the most exciting occasions to photograph is a surprise proposal. There is so much love, excitement, and suspense in the air! It often goes by in a whirlwind for the happy couple, who will still want to remember every special moment. That’s where you come in- but how to get perfect photos of such a uniquely candid experience?

Be Prepared

As with any photoshoot, it is absolutely crucial to arrive prepared. Make sure to get to the location early and scout it out in advance so you know your way around and can keep a low profile. It is always important to make sure you have the right gear for your shoot, but especially in this situation. You have to keep everything running smoothly in order to make sure the proposal stays a surprise, so keep spare batteries, lens cloths, and memory cards on you at all times. It can also be helpful to have two camera bodies with different lenses, both to use as a backup and to prevent the need from switching out lenses mid-shoot.

Keep it a Surprise

Naturally, the most important part of a surprise proposal is keeping it a secret until the perfect moment. Talk to your client ahead of time to figure out how you will do so. Ask them to send you photos of them and identify their vehicles ahead of time so you know who you’re photographing and don’t have to ruin the moment by asking. By pretending to be a tourist, hiding somewhere discreet, or casually asking the couple if they would like a photo taken, you can get all of the shots you need without spoiling the surprise.

Get the Perfect Shots

Now that you’re prepared for the shoot, it is important to talk to your client ahead of time and figure out what their specific plan is for proposing. By finding out exactly when and where they plan to pop the question. Then, you can craft your own strategy on how to capture every expression and every moment. This way, you know where to be to get wide shots, close-ups, and everything in between. It is important to get a variety of photos on such a special occasion. Both candid and posed (after they’ve asked the question, of course), so make sure you ask your client in advance if they have anything particular in mind.

Surprise engagements are both challenging and exciting to shoot. Every story will be different, but use these basic tips to help you capture any proposal seamlessly!

Words can not express how thankful and happy we are that we chose Monica to capture our perfect day. She made us feel both comfortable and confident in the whole process. She has this ease that makes you feel you’ve known her for years. Her kindness, personality, and professionalism was beyond what we could have hoped for. Her communication and organization was so impressive as well (I am far from organized)! Our photos are AMAZING, they are perfect. We wish we could do it all over again, and again. Seriously, book her right now! Best choice we could have made, and she helped make our day so wonderfully memorable and way less stressful.
