Rachel and Budda: Dark Skies Flagstaff Arizona Portrait
Dark Skies Flagstaff Arizona Portrait- Rachel and Budda’s Session. YOU GUYS! I’ve been staying up past my bedtime this summer to try something new. Growing up in a big city – you would only see a handful of stars at night. I remember when I moved to Flagstaff, I was absolutely mesmerized by the amount of stars you can see even in the middle of town. 10 years later and I still catch myself feeling overwhelmed by the volume of stars that fill the sky each night. Whether I am camping, walking the dogs, or simply taking something to the trash – I always pause and revel in their beauty.
This got me thinking seriously throughout the last year about how absolutely spoiled I am to live in Northern Arizona. Anyone who has met me has heard me go on and on about how great my little mountain town is. All times of year. All times of day. This place is pure beauty.
My new project – well obsession – is to capture some moments under these night skies. I’m so excited to be working with some adventurous couples who share the same appreciation for both astronomy and what it means to be an International Dark Skies City.
Flagstaff Arizona:
As an International Dark Sky City, Flagstaff strives to meet certain standards with regards to light pollution. Flagstaff has been recognized for its pioneering work in the development and implementation of lighting codes that balance the need to preserve Flagstaff’s dark sky resource with the need for safe lighting practices.
A dark, star-filled night sky is often thought of as important for astronomy or research. Though this is true, the grandeur of the night sky is much deeper and broader, and accessible to anyone. We find the beauty and meaning of natural night is best expressed by poets and writers, such as Henry Beston.
As the international dark sky movement began in Flagstaff in 1958, our community has always been keenly aware of the special value of the night sky. The Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition and the greater community of Flagstaff are proud to remain world leaders in practical and successful dark sky protection.
